Greg Martin is an EMT-Basic and a volunteer Captain with Poquoson Fire and Rescue. Thursday afternoon, he was front and center to an accident in which two children were seriously injured.

He was so front and center, in fact, that after the collision, the vehicles slid into the front grill of his GMC Somona pickup truck.

Two young children were injured in the accident. According to State Police spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya, the children's father, Michael Sawyer, 35, of Azalea Drive in Newport News, has been charged with reckless driving, running a red light, and failure to secure a child in a child restraint.

"He was coming south on 134 in a Chevy Malibu. I watched as the driver with the children ran the red light and started to turn left onto Yorktown Road . He was rammed into by a Chevy Van (Sienna). The van was doing about 55 milles per hour," Mr. Martin told James River Journal.

He continued, "The two vehicles crashed and then slid all the way into the front of my grill. There wasn't anything I could do. I was stopped at a stop sign." I wasn't injured, and my airbag didn't deploy, so I got out of my vehicle and grabbed my (emergency) bag to see if I could render assistance."

"It was pretty bad. The boy was walking around but needed assistance, which I provided the best I could until the York County and Poquoson Fire and EMT could arrive. While I was stooped down assisting the boy, I happened to notice the two year old girl. She had been ejected from the Malibu and was underneath the engine of the van. I removed her from the hazardous area, and began to render treatment, the best I could, until the Fire Department arrived."

Mr. Martin is prohibited from discussing the specific treatment he provided.
